Where and What Are the Gili Islands?

The Gili Islands are a group of three small islands located off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia. Lombok is Bali’s neighboring island, situated directly to the east, and the Gilis are just a short boat ride away from Bali. The three islands are:

Gili Trawangan (Gili T)

Often referred to as "Gili T," Gili Trawangan is the largest and most developed of the three Gili Islands. All the island's facilities are located along a circular road that follows the coastline, making it easy to explore by foot or bicycle. You can also venture inland towards the center of the island, but apart from accommodations like private villas, there isn’t much to see there.

How to Get to the Gili Islands from Bali

The most popular way to reach the Gilis from Bali is by Fast Boat. Here’s what you need to know:

• Departure Points: Most boats leave from Padang Bai Port (East Bali), but you can also depart from Serangan, Nusa Penida, Bangsal (from Lombok) and Senggigi (from Lombok).
• Duration: Around 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the route and weather.
• Popular Fast Boat Operators: Eka Jaya, BlueWater Express
• Price Range: Expect to pay around IDR 650,000 - 1,000,000 return trip. (Price varies depending on seasonality)

Tips:

• For those that get sea sick easily, we would recommend taking the shortest route from Bali, which is from Padang Bai Port. It takes less than 2 hour car journey from Seminyak to Padang Bai but you'll thank me for having reduce your time on boat by half.
• You can buy tickets online or at the port as the fast boat operators have an office or a counter near the port of departure, but we recommend you prebook your tickets incase the boat is full.
• There's only a few departure timing in the morning and afternoon, so make sure to take the earliest in order to start your island holiday quicker!

Gili Islands Travel Tips for First-Timers

• Cash is Preferred: ATMs are available, but it's safer to carry some cash incase there's a problem with the ATM, which happens more often than one like to think.
• No Motor Vehicles: Transport is by bicycle (most accommodation will offer bike rental.), walking, or horse carts (called "cidomo"). The horse cart cost around IDR 150,000 to any destination around the island if you don't want to haul your luggage around.
• Best Time to Visit: May to October is dry season, offering calm seas and sunny weather.
